Traces on the Farther Side is a commission by Parthenia Viol Consort to accompany live or recorded performances of Frances White's A Flower on the farther side (after Hildegard of Bingen's Alleluia, o virga mediatrix) (2010), a 15-minute composition for four viols and pre-recorded wind and viol sounds.
The visual component accompanying this piece is an act of drawing generated in real time by its aural counterpart. The acoustic signal from each performer’s instrument is used as an input that guides the distributed markings along the canvas, making each performance a unique representation of its event.
