Likeness of an Allegory is a site-specific permanent installation designed for the 6th floor elevator lobby ceiling of the new Minneapolis Public Services Building. LUCITO’s intervention responds to the City’s call for “luminous ceilings” by working with light and its complete absence: a sculptural mass finished in ultra-matte black pigment hovers ominously below an evenly lit ambient field of light. Due to its unique finish, the hovering mass is devoid of surface features, rendering it visible to the human eye only at its edges against the light field above.

While operating at this binary interface between light and dark, LUCITO’s work takes inspiration and cues from Ambrogio Loronzetti’s 14th Century frescoes, The Allegory of Good and Bad Government. In LUCITO’s Likeness of an Allegory, a game of perceptual hide-and-seek plays out as strategically sculpted characteristics and symbolic features of Minneapolis’ past and present reveal themselves to the observant passerby in the lobby below.

a project by LUCITO

︎
The story of the Mesabi Iron Range dates back to prehistory in geological terms. The Hull Rust Mahoning Open Mine Pit, one of the largest open pit mines in the world, has never stopped its expansion since the discovery of iron ore 150 years ago.
The City of Hibbing, no stranger to the effects of an the expanding mine, was once hailed as “The Town that Moved” in honor of its early 20th century migration. Today, this journey continues coinciding with the relocation of the Hull Rust Mine View Overlook. The new park and visitor center is a recognition of the Mesabi Range’s legacy rooted in geologic and historical circumstances. Please visit LUCITO for more information.

Artemisia, a new opera by Laura Schwendinger with libretto by Ginger Strand, is an opera of passion, betrayal, and art in 17th Century Italy based upon the life of famed painter Artemisia Gentileschi (1593 - c.1656). With projected images that come to life, the opera tackles Gentileschi’s struggles and triumphs as she battles inequality and reveals hidden stories.

Lucia’s projections reflect

Gentileschi’s tumuluous life and blindness, continually reworking and degrading the artist’s original paintings in real time, allowing the audience to experience Gentileschi's visual decline with her.

From the Field, composed by Christopher Stark with Libretto by Megan Stark, is a micro-opera presenting three brief glimpses into specific moments in American history in which the government chose to contradict environmental research it commissioned for financial and/or political gain: Dorothea Lange’s Farm Security Administration photographs of rural poverty during the Great Depression; John Wesley Powell’s 19th-century warning about water usage in the American West; and Nobel Laureate Steve Running’s current research on climate change.

Taking visual inspiration at its source, Lucia’s projections fuse the actual images, negatives, and field notes of Dorothea Lange, as well as official governmental documents of the time, working them into a highly provocative visual accompaniment to Stark’s experimental opera.

︎

Traces on the Farther Side is a commission by Parthenia Viol Consort to accompany live or recorded performances of Frances White's A Flower on the farther side (after Hildegard of Bingen's Alleluia, o virga mediatrix) (2010), a 15-minute composition for four viols and pre-recorded wind and viol sounds.
The visual component accompanying this piece is an act of drawing generated in real time by its aural counterpart. The acoustic signal from each performer’s instrument is used as an input that guides the distributed markings along the canvas, making each performance a unique representation of its event.
